The grey anodizing on the MA40 is not for color (alone) but is a hardening process that makes a stronger wheel, better to resist dents and warping.

We did a highly scientific (?) test in our bike shop with two Mavic rims, one clear anodized and the other the hard ano "CD" finish.

We took out the seam plugs and tried to straighten the rims out to a long straight extrusion* in the bench vise.

The clear ano version bends easily and can be made into a 8 foot (?) long spear shaped thing.

But when you try to straighten the "CD" hard anodized rim, it starts to bend and bend, strongly resisting the higher force required, then POW! It breaks into pieces, shattering rather than bending! A pretty impressive display!

(* We have done this a bunch of times, kept the straightened rim behind the counter, and when a customer comes in and asks "Do you straighten rims?" we haul that piece out and say "Like this you mean" and show him/her the long thing. Always good for a laugh....)

I have read these are identical except the MA 40 is dark grey anodized (like mine) and the M2 is clear anodized. Why is the MA40 preferred when the brakes visibly wear the edges of the Dk grey anodizing.
