While your ascii graphic representation came across just fine, I'm not entirely sure I understand whether you're looking at the top of the tire or its imprint on the road in your direction diagram. As I understand it, tires with a "V" type tread pattern should be mounted so they squeeze surface water out to the sides when rolling. This is also the same for tractor tires, which must be mounted so the treads are self-cleaning and don't load up with mud. In other words, the "V" pattern should point in the direction the tire rolls. Are you saying that this motorcycle tire was marked to roll the opposite way, not like these here?

Anyway, I'm not sure whether tread direction has any effect on road bicycle tires, even in the wet.
