Don and all,
I use on topic pedals for my on topic bikes, and even a few "newer" ones to o. You can find proper cycling shoes with cleats at swaps and ebay if you a re patient. I find absolutly no problems with these pedals/clips. Nothing l ooks more out of place than clipless pedals on a vintage bike. Nothing!
Another way to go, for more casual use and frequent get offs with walking a re "touring" style cycling shoes with stiffening inserts under the ball of the foot. I think this style is also available...I still have my Nike Velos from way back and they work great.
Also, see these Puma (currently available) shoes at the link below. These w ere first made for Shot Putters of all things, but they too work well for a more casual riding style.
