Yes, they did. Huret's own dropouts replicated the "claw" geometry and thus didn't require any special adapter, but for other designs (i.e. Campy) a special tabbed washer could be used to mount the unit properly. These are, alas, in short supply these days -- hence the innovative cobble-jobs being discussed.
