I'd like to announce our new book "The Competition Bicycle - A Photographic History."
On 176 pages, this new book explores the world of cycling competition, presented in stunning full-color studio photography by Jean-Pierre Pradères. Here you find the actual bikes (not look-alikes) of Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, Greg LeMond, Andy Hampsten, Francesco Moser, Sean Kelly, Tony Rominger and many other champions. However, not only professional road racers are covered, but also women national and world champions, as well as a mountain bike pioneer.
The bikes were selected not only for their famous riders, but also to provide a history of competition bicycles, from a super-rare racing High Wheeler to Tony Rominger's hour record bike. In between, you find rare machines such as a superlight 1903 Dursley Pedersen racer and sturdy bikes for the rough roads of the 1920s Tour de France. You see innovative 1930s machines with aluminum frames, an American Six-Day bicycle and a tandem that set an hour record.
Amateurs are represented, among others, by a PBP-winning randonneur tandem and a bike from the competitions of the Paris newspaper couriers, as well as a 1965 Cinelli of a pioneer road racer in the Pacific Northwest and a bike that participated in the first Race Across America. Historic photos of the bikes in competition set the scene.
The bikes in this book illustrate the history of competition bicycles, from the first pneumatic tires via the first derailleurs to carbon fiber disc wheels. Along the way, witness the introduction of aluminum components, the rise of Campagnolo during the 1950s and the Shimano's challenge during the 1980s.
