Once again I am struck by what an amazing group this list is. This morning I received from Kim Klakow a short video he made for me showing how to remove the crank! Bob Hanson sent a scan of a catalog page that shows the parts diagram. Several others gave good suggestions. (Not surprisingly, no one thought very highly of my brute force idea). Anyway, Kim's video (with detailed voice over narrative) points out that I need to remove all three pieces of the cotter pin before the crank are will come off (duh!). I'll try that tonight and it will likely solve my problem.
So here I am in Vermont and late at night sent out an inquiry, only to wake up the next morning to a half dozen responses and a short video received from Germany! Amazing!
Thanks to all who responded!
