I have a rather beautiful complete bike for sale and a rare British frame - the bike is a large 1960s (I think 1964) Flying Scot which has been fitted out with almost entirely period equipment. The frame is a rare George Longstaff road frame - with just one previous owner. George Longstaff is best known for his trikes and tandems - his frames are really rather rare on the market because most riders do not part with the one they have had built. Almost all were custom built (he did build a few stock frames at the end of the 1980s but these were very few in number) and of all the British builders of the last 25 years I would rate George as The framebuilder’s framebuilder. He was universally regarded in the UK as being quite superb - I once watched him braze a bottom bracket into place (he used silver solder for all lugged joints) there was just a hint of a glow where the torch passed over the bottom bracket shell and within about five minutes, down tube, seat tube and chainstays had been silver soldered into place. His control of the heat was near perfect. He was trained as an engineer first and he had a fully equipped engineering workshop which was used to make many special parts for the tandems and trikes as well as quite a lot of small sub contract orders for local industry. His death at quite a young age just a few years ago was a tragedy though framebuilding still continues to this day carried out by staff he personally trained. Every frame had a full engineering drawing and it may well be possible to get a copy of the drawing for this frame.

Details of both the Flying Scot and the George Longstaff follow on below.

FLYING SCOT 24.5in 1964 CLUBMAN’S BIKE Period Equipment Very nice Offered for sale is a lovely 24.5in ctt 1964 Flying Scot bicycle in very good condition and complete with mostly period correct equipment. Top tube length is 22.5in and rear dropout width 120mm. It will be built from Reynolds 531 double butted tubing. This frame is in very good condition - the paintwork is a little scruffy but is very useable as it is. The frame is built with Prugnat lugs and Campag long dropouts with mudguard eyes. It has Campagnolo Gran Sport front and rear gears with Campagnolo down-tube levers. Chainset is a Milremo 5-pin cottered steel with TA double adaptor and rings. Bars and stem are GB and the brakes are Universal 61 centre-pulls complete with the correct stops and bridges; brake levers are Super Olimpic (which are very similar to Mafac in appearance). There’s a very sound Brooks B17 Narrow saddle on a Birmulux aluminium seatpin. Wheels are excellent Weinmann Alesa 27 x 1 1/4in on Campag Gran Sport hubs - large flange at the front, small flange at the rear. With wheels I would like $850 or 420 GBP or close offer, without the wheels $775 or 360 GBP. Shipping to the USA uninsured will be $195, to Japan and Australia $240 and within the UK it will be 20 GBP. Without wheels the cost will be Shipping to the USA uninsured will be $150, to Japan and Australia $180 and within the UK it will be $25.

GEORGE LONGSTAFF ROAD FRAME 1997 21in Offered for sale is a lovely 21in ctt 1997 George Longstaff road frame in excellent condition. Top tube length is 21.25in and rear dropout width 130mm. It is built from Columbus SLX tubing - it is built lugless at the head tube and with a seat lug and lugged bottom bracket shell. Rear dropouts are vertical and the clearances are quite close. The fillet brazing at the head tube is truly gorgeous - George used larger fillets than many other builders but he controlled the heat input very carefully - the head tube is not distorted out of round. It is fitted with an excellent Stronglight A9 headset. It is finished in a silver polychromatic paint which has only a few minor marks - however the lacquar has crazed. I would like $395ono (200 GBP) for this rare frame. Shipping to the USA uninsured will be $145, to Japan and Australia $170 and within the UK it will be 12 GBP.
