Subject: [CR]The Ephgrave is alive

My early 50s Ephgrave #1, bought at Cirque last year, is now officially on the road. I bought it from Mike Kone, whom I thank, and I hope it helped just a bit in capitalizing the Herse initiative.

It's red, with grey panels. Had been built with a Cyclo (?) derailleur hanger and right-side boss, but the hanger was amputated sometime before its repaint. It's now got an ASC, Harden HF front hub, and old Fiammi red label sprints (Thanks, Ken Sanford, for selling me the rims and front hub). A funny thing, that. The ASC seems to always have been laced 4x, with the spokes lying in the same direction each lacing. This is good. I discovered that the Fiammis are not the same handedness as the former rims, so on one side there will be new indentations from the new spokes. Did that on the drive side, so it might be shielded by the 18th. sprocket I use. :-) Will I be forgiven for using a "modern" down-tube shifter boss cable stop for the trigger for the ASC? That way the trigger is mounted low on the handlebar end, sort of like a modern bar-end. Not traditional, but out of the way of the brake lever, and easy to get to.

BTW, for all you frustrated old Sturmey geeks and goons, I have had no trouble converting the older drives (threaded, and I think even the 12 (?) spline, to modern 3-spline snap-on. Fits right in, and it is much easier to change cogs.
