> Jon, I can't speak about your or Billy's level of desperation, but I have made many a chainguard out of an old worn-out large chainrings, and it is very satisfying to recycle one into something useful and not so difficult. The trick is to break the teeth off with pliers, I find Channelock (aka Waterpump) types work nicely and when you get in the rhythm the teeth come off quickly. That leaves less material to grind smooth with the other tool you must have: a bench grinder or disk sander (I have even used a hobby-duty Dremel disk sander and it was fine). Then it's up to me how much hand polishing to indulge in, but they can be made to look like 'chrome'. Since I've never made an inner guard yet (ala the CX chainset), I may make that my next project.
