As I said, *only* do what I was mentioning if the contents of the can are valuable to you, and do be careful. You never know what part of the aerosol can system isn't working (i.e., the contents may still be under pressure). Don't mess with the valve -- nothing good ever comes of that stunt (as was evidenced by Lou's story of youthful idiocy). If you're going to be resort to puncturing the can, do it somewhere benign (up at the top, but not using the valve hole, which has a straw going down into the remaining contents), with a rag over it to prevent getting covered with paint should something go wrong, wearing safety glasses, etc.

If you're doing all of this because you don't want to spring for another $5 can of paint.....don't. Such measures are only for extreme cases where there are valuable and/or irreplaceable contents in the can (i.e., seldom).

I thought I'd telegraphed all of that in the opening sentence of my last note.

Oh, and I'll be run out of Francisco unless I point out that if you decide to toss the can, dispose of it responsibly, too. Better to just keep it on the shelf for a few decades more for your heirs to deal with.

I have a horror story from about 25 years ago where cheapo Lou had a can of paint that was new and wouldn't work. I tried to push a straight pin into the top. I got a gusher of paint into my nostrils, eyes, and face. I remember running to the shower and standing there for 15 minutes to flush it out. Not a good idea. My recommendation--don't be cheap. Toss the can and buy a new one. Lou Deeter, Orlando FL USA

Assuming you don't have a compressor and spray gun and all of the stuff you

need for proper spraying, and that whatever is in the can is something you

really want, and that the "pour it out and use a brush" isn't acceptable,

you might try a Preval spray gun.

It's essentially a siphon-feed spray gun fired by a can of air. If you have

the viscosity right, you'll get the same results as a spray can -- don't

expect anything better.

Worth a look, if you're needing this functionality bad enough. I can get

'em off the shelf at TAP Plastic and I've seen the stuff at a couple of

better hobby shops, too. Do20a web search and have a look. Some auto paint

places will also make you a new spray can for a small price.

You may be able to get a few more squirts out of the can after soaking it in

hot water. Otherwise, transferring it to a jar for brushing, or a discarded

pump spray bottle, would be the only solution.
