If I want modern components I have a semi modern bike to hang them on, and even that is getting long in the tooth ( 1989 Serotta ). While I'm not a complete luddite I do feel that I want to keep my bikes as period correct as possible. The only exceptions are I use DT double butted spokes when I lace up wheels, and when I'm going for long rides I really prefer to use speedplay pedals to avoid any additional knee problems. I also intend to use these on my Pogliaghi Pista when I next ride it at the velodrome, I find my sidi shoes ( modern Genius models) are more supportive than the older lace up shoes. As for shoes, I have a pair of old noname classic shoes which I use for riding as well as a pair of Diadoras with a nice deep cleat. For more casual riding I bought a pair of Avocet Touring shoes from Steven Maasland which are perfect for running errands, coffee shop stops etc.
As to what you should ride? if I may quote listmember Sarah Gibson "_ride yr friggin bicycle_ " .
