Hi All contrbutors to this thread. In 1970 whilst serving in the Army at Plymouth (familiar territory Ian Briggs from Luton where you were a young soldier!) I had a desire to build a frame, and built one for my son then aged 12. He raced it in schoolboy events including cyclocross. and it didn't fall apart. Entirely self taught with no advice from other builders who are very protective of their methods and techniques. In 1978 I was manager at Ilkeston producing Tour de France and World Championship frames. If the desire is there, you will succeed. My Mantra. and I believe that of Lance Armstrong's mother - "There is no such thing as problems, only opportunities".
