Hi Charles, et al -

I have read several online forums where it was mentioned that a heavy motor oil (i.e. straight 30w or thicker) was often used. On second thought, I'm agreeing with your statement below that grease is less likely to flow out and more likely to stay put?unless diluted. At second glance, the oil only seems practical if you have the time, tools, and inclination to frequently check the lubrication and cleanliness status of your hubs.

What type of grease is recommended - and is there any type that should specifically be avoided?

I have another?slightly?off-topic bike with Shimano Ultegra hubs, and the rear wheel (with freehub) on that one seems to significantly spin more freely than the Campy NR hub with a freewheel. Might this be due to the freehub design, use of different lubricants, or need for adjustment?of the Campy hub and/or freewheel attached to it??I welcome the experience of my fellow CR members.

Thanks,

Paul,

I'd recommend running wheel bearings a good quality grease. It will last longer than oil and can help keep dirt out of the bearings. Putting oil in those holes in Campy hubs will just dilute the grease.

That said, as I understand it, the oil holes were for use on track bikes and maybe short races where regular maintenance was performed. If you notice, there are little holes in the dust caps on the hubs to flush out the old oil. Without cleaning after oiling, these can get pretty messy.
