As for your question, "Would a 'good' race type bike have used Simplex, etc. or would it have been 'tout Mavic' if French equipped?"....

For a mid 1980's build, I say that you cannot go much wrong following Sean "King of the Classics" Kelly's lead (...ranked number one in the pro peloton for the majority of that decade) - and that would result in a predominantly MAVIC based build. MAVIC components dating from this era were of exceptional quality and compared favorably with respect to any other of their contemporaries (...albeit, retaining a few idiosyncrasies in the finest French tradition). Besides, the once proud and almighty Simplex as an autonomous entity was on its last legs by that point in time (...sigh) and the not oft seen Huret badged group never got any traction in racing circles (...or elsewhere, quite frankly - Fitchel Sachs AG, who controlled Huret by then, never chose to push a "component group" concept).

Whenever WoolJersey makes its much awaited reappearance, you might consider reviewing that information posted therein pertaining to the 1986 Vitus 979 Duralinox build I undertook following a tout MAVIC / tout Français theme. There are ample pictures and specifics contained within the descriptive text which delineate many subtleties with respect to various component pieces of the MAVIC lineup dating from that timeframe should you be the type that obsesses over being absolutely period correct down to a very specific year.

Howdy folks.

I have a 1984ish Nuovo/Super Record mixed gruppo that is destined for a French frame set. I got to thinking that a completely French build would be cool, but I don't know that much about mid-80s French components. Would a "good" race type bike have used Simplex, etc. or would it have been "tout Mavic" if French equipped? What Mavic components would most likely have been used on a nice but not top of the line bike? Was there more than one group available? My perception is that the Mavic stuff is a lot less common than same vintage Campy. Is that correct?

Thanks, Doug
