Simplex was still around in the mid-80's, as was Huret, competing with Campy, Mavic, and the Japanese.
I have the original 1986 Peugeot brochure that came with my 1986 PZ.
The top of the line was the PY10FC, a rebranded Vitus aluminum/carbon frame. This was actually sold as a frameset, but the brochure pictures it built up with Simplex SLJ 6600 horizonal parallelogram RD, matching FD, Mafac LS SP's and Stronglight 106 crank. Top steel bike was the 531SL PZ, all Campy NR/SR. Next was the PX, Columbus SLX and "tout Mavic".
The next two models were both Super Vitus 980, the PSN10 and the Triathlon. The PSN10 had Campy Victory with Maillard Helicomatic hubs and Modolo brakes, the Triathlon the same brakes and hubs, but Stronglight cranks and Huret New Success derailleurs..
An amazing variety of components. So a mid-80's French bike can be equipped with just about anything you like, Simplex/Stronglight, Huret, Mavic, Campy SR,NR, Victory or Triomphe, or even Japanese.

\r?\n> Subject: [CR] What Mavic components would have been used in 1984?

\r?\n> Howdy folks.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> I have a 1984ish Nuovo/Super Record mixed gruppo that is
\r?\n> destined for a
\r?\n> French frame set. I got to thinking that a completely
\r?\n> French build would be
\r?\n> cool, but I don't know that much about mid-80s French
\r?\n> components. Would a
\r?\n> "good" race type bike have used Simplex, etc. or would it
\r?\n> have been "tout
\r?\n> Mavic" if French equipped? What Mavic components
\r?\n> would most likely have
\r?\n> been used on a nice but not top of the line bike? Was
\r?\n> there more than one
\r?\n> group available? My perception is that the Mavic
\r?\n> stuff is a lot less common
\r?\n> than same vintage Campy. Is that correct?
\r?\n>
\r?\n> Thanks, Doug
