Rapid taper chainstays were available for many years - 20 years ago I picked up a lot of framebuilding material that had been left over from a framebuilder who had built Silverthans for Thanets in 1951 - there was at least forty sets of the rapid taper chainstays... I think they may have even been around pre-war - they work well on frames with no problems with clearance. I think what Raleigh used must have been bargain leftovers they snapped up from Reynolds.

I believe however he is somewhat mistaken in suggesting they were available "for a short time only". I have a 1977 {WK7 series} International which is built using these stays. I don't know if they were offered as an option for all the years in between Bob's and my frames. Perhaps Raleigh found a bunch of leftovers in 1977 and decided to use them up. Anyone with better information out there?
