This is my first e-mail to CR.
I was glad to see someone(s) admit to the "sound of old freewheels" addiction. As a youth I always kept the Regina on my entry-level Holdsworth flooded with 3 in 1 oil. Beside the probable illusion that it made the bike faster, it created a strange "liquid" sound overlay to the clicking. I always thought the Reginas sounded less "metallic" than others. Maybe mine did because it was drowning in oil. The sound of a freewheel echoing off curbs is still a little delight of mine.
Last summer my son set up an old casette tape recorder, mounted his own old bike (with a Regina GS) on the repair stand, and recorded the sound of the freewheel from flat out down to the last click. This tape has also recorded the sound of an old Alfa Romeo aluminum 2 liter engine, starting up and at various RPM. A unique sound in itself. Listening to this tape reminds me of buying a 45 RPM record with two TOP 40 hits on it; I am sorry if you are too young to relish that good old feeling!
