For years I rode in Adidas Sambas indoor soccer shoes, which are black and low profile. I still wear these if I am riding a short distance and/or need to walk around a lot. Last year I got some Lake shoes with traditional slotted cleats. They are great for longer rides. I hope I don't jinx myself, but I have not fallen, and I have not had any trouble getting my feet out of the pedals.
Chrome has a new line of sneakers out that are designed for riding, although they don't look especially on-topic
