Rob,
How old is the shifter? If early Ergo generation, you often saw the left hand down tube shifter on Pro's bike to save weight for big mountain climbs. The theory being that the down tube?shifter and a brake lever combined?was lighter than the ergo shifter. Was not considered as a disadvantage since on a long climb the rider is, again theoretically, not shifting as much.?If an older generation shifter, can only think that perhaps?the use of a bar con for the rear and again the down tube for the front. ?Anyone else have any ideas??

Looking to build up a five speed I purchased, unseen, a single sided
down tube shifter; Only to find that this Campy shifter is made
(irreversibly)
for the left side of the downtube. What would this be for?
