RALEIGH ILKESTON ROAD FRAME 21.25in 1978
Offered for sale is a very sound 21.25in (ctt) Raleigh road frame with a
21.5in ctc top tube. Rear dropout width is 126mm. Bottom bracket
threads are English. It is built from Reynolds 531 double butted tubing
with Prugnat lugs with windows. It takes a 27.2mm seatpost. This was
made at the Raleigh Ilkeston plant under the direct supervision of
Gerald O\u2019Donovan. There are some gorgeous touches such as the slotted
bottom bracket and oversize seatstay cap. It is designed for use with
allen nut fitting brakes. The frame appears to be very sound with no
dents. This frame has more generous tyre/brake clearances than is
standard so making it ideal for use with guards if necessary; brake drop
is approx 54mm with 700C wheels.
In autumn 1974 Raleigh established a specialist workshop (SBDU) capable
of frame building to the very highest standards at Ilkeston in
Derbyshire. Frames were built for the Ti-Raleigh continental pro team
from the very beginning. They produced the only British frame to ever
win the Tour de France (Joop Zoetemelk, 1980). The unit worked with
Reynolds in developing Reynolds 753 and the first frames were tested by
the Ti-Raleigh team in 1974. Genuine Ilkeston frames can be identified
by frame numbers with 1 to approx 9500, prefixed SB. For a company as
large as Raleigh, the SBDU was quite an unusual operation. Its
production capacity was modest \u2013 at a maximum only about 1000 frames or
so a year from about four framebuilders. SBDU frames were mostly built
in stock designs except for the actual team frames.
This frame needs a full repaint; that should be very straightforward. I
can deliver it free of charge for the successful buyer to Argos Cycles
who I consider to be one of the best frame painters in the UK. Details

HOLDSWORTH MONSOON FRAME 23in c1960 Lovely fancy lugs
Seat Tube (ctt): 23in
Top Tube (ctc): 23in
Rear dropout width: 120mm
Frame tubing: Reynolds 531 DB
This a lateish Holdsworth Monsoon with slightly more fancy lugs and is
much rarer than the standard Monsoon. It did not have its original fork
when I got this frame but I have found a very suitable fork which even
has the ideal steerer length. The frame is very sound and just needs
repainting. Decals are available from http://www.hlloydcycles.com/
CONSTRICTOR CONLOY 27 x 1 1/4in 32/40H RIMS the front one is in
excellent lightly worn condition, the rear shows some signs of wear but
has plenty of life left in it. These are not corroded and will clean up
and polish well - they have some marks but nothing serious.
Constrictor rims in this sort of condition rare turn up and have in
recent times been fetching £200 on Ebay. 90 GBP
