Subject: [CR] "Trick" Equipment
Ahoy !(Second attempt to post for reason of seemingly “greeked” text previously.) I found this bit of information on the Ultra Cycling Hall of Fame web site concerning Lon Haldeman. I was reminded of the fastest, best tyres tubing, gearing discussions that arise occasionally on the List (and that I read with interest despite my own spare tyre). Ha ! I could only hope. Note Lon’s equipment. http://www.ultracycling.com/about/hof_haldeman.html In 1979 Lon set the Wisconsin End to End Record going south against the wind. The distance was 407 miles in 23 hours 7 minutes. He used a one speed bike with a 42 x 14 gear (82 inches). Lon rode the first 250 miles without a support crew and then was joined by his parents who followed him at night the remaining miles. 1981 Lon rode a 24 hour track record at the Northbrook Track near Chicago. He used the same one speed bike for commuting to work and back 90 miles the day before. During the track record the luggage racks and water bottles were removed. The bike had 27 inch clincher tires. During the track record the distances and times were: 100 miles 4h 11m200 miles 8h 4m300 miles 13h 23m400 miles 18h 50m454 total miles Richard CielecChicago, Illinois; U.S.A.
