I'll add my own further research here.

I am surprised to find that FedEx Ground beats UPS on shipping Canada to USA. quotes for my 13kg/29lb 20cmx129cmx51xm bike box (8x51x28inches) come out as follows:

to NYC (10017) 53.43 CAD or about $$50 US to CA (94602) $80.43 CAD Or about $75 US.
