Further to this topic aired a few weeks ago. In working on vintage cars, I was pointed toward a 3M product. It's their "Scotch Brite" cleaning pads. These vary in abrasiveness and are color coded so be sure to get the blue "no scratch" pads. They're available in any supermarket or hardware store. I wouldn't use them on pristine chrome, but then why would you need to? They will take off almost any rust and even smooth some pitting. I prefer using them wet and the more they're used, the better they get.
