George,

I've a book, mostly on speed records behind motor pacing, but also has lots of discussion on stayer racing. It focuses on the history of individuals who set average and top speed records, but also their exploits on the track. Goes up to John Howard's setting the top speed record, which I think still stands.

The write-ups are hair raising, amazing speeds. Popular through the mid-20th century was to set a motor paced hour record on the velodrome, at speeds in excess of 70mph!

It's called: "Racing the Wind" by Cecil Cripps.

Can anyone recommend a book or article describing motor paced (stayerJ) racing? I've seen pictures of the bikes on tracks closely following a motor cycle with a roller on the back but I know nothing about the kind of racing, rules, etc.
