For years I had my wheels built 4X. It is true that on a high flange hub built 4X, the spokes will come close to rubbing other spoke heads. Not quite on Campy or Normandy HF but very close. Any larger flange than that and 4X spokes will rub or even cross over other spoke heads. Not quite sure how that will affect ride, but it's going to cause wear on the spokes and eventually shorten wheel life. When I began building all my own wheels about 10 years ago, I soon settled on 3X as my usual spoking because of this.
