Subject: [CR] Galli-Jap.Maxy BB Spindle - Huh?

Ahoy ! Does this make sense? What for, what's the history, and such?

Galli bb spindle (cotterless for three-piece crank) has16.45mm dia. at base of bearing race which is Japanese Maxy-type dimension as per Sutherlands. Did Galli cranks use this type of spindle (Galli cranks were really Maxy?). What is "Japanese Maxy-type" ? How does Japanese Maxy-type fit in with On Topic bikes?

Sutherlands also states Maxy-type could be used with TA cranks to place chain line farther from frame.  I hand fitted a TA three-arm crank onto this Galli-Maxy and inner ring (42t) is merely several mm's away from stay though crank has not been tightened down. Is Sutherland's not correct in saying the Maxy will place chain line outward?

Galli spindle has castings as follows: Galli; 18; 4; C; and an "S" that looks not alphabetical but, like an electrical current symbol from a schematic (designates crank side?). Incidentally, spindle measures 118 +2; so, I assume the "18" casting proclaims the length. Nothing, to me, indicates English or Italian.

I have not trial-fitted the Galli-Maxy into a Campag crank.

Thanks for any information and stories.
