Just a thought on this one. Coppi has a downtube water bottle mount, yet he is holding a water bottle in his left hand with the stopper out, implying that it was empty and he needed to add water. Bartali looks like he has two water bottles, one on the bar and one on the downtube. So, I believe that is Coppi's second bottle he is sharing with Bartali and he has just added part of it to his spare bottle so that Bartali doesn't have to give it back to him. What I don't know about is the tradition back then about what to do with empty water bottles. Did they carry them to the finish line, hand them to the car or toss them on the side of the road. My impression is that they carry them to the finish. Other thoughts? Lou Deeter, Orlando FL USA

I've listed a poster of the well known image of Coppi handing a bottle to
Bartali (or Bartali to Coppi, nobody really knows, right?), on the climb of the
Col d'Izoard, in the 52 Tour. The poster is autographed by Bartali.
