Off topic? Maybe not: http://www.classicrendezvous.com/France/Roval.htm and even Dale contributed On Sep 4, 2009:

As far as the link to cycling forums: I'd already seen that. It has some interesting details regarding proprietary threading and nipples but the thread dates back to 2004, and doesn't offer much in the way of recent options for sourcing the spokes (Business Cycles and A. Muzi are both out of stock ... long ago) nor does it elaborate if anyone has had much success using straight pull spokes from other manufacturers in place of the proprietary Roval spokes. I'm keen to open dialogue to this point as I'd be opting to build some Roval hubs with different type rims to the original. Thinking: nice touch for my Vitus 979 .... keeping it so Frenchy, so Chic.

As to the the ebay auction link. The vendor doesn't ship outside the US and even if they did I'd rather just buy hubs as shipping wheels from the US to Oz is * very expensive *!!! Also, because I can source rims locally to me that are close to the style/appearance of Roval rims.

I appreciate that your helpful intentions but this isn't black or white, or to my knowledge a scenario that has been hashed out before on the CR list. I made mention that i'd checked the CR archives and I ask here as some of the listers opinions here carry a lot of weight and influence my thinking related to classic bikes, and that I highly value. That is to say (for example) if Ted Ernst, Joe BZ, Steven Maasland etc etc said "This is a dumb idea because ...." I'd listen and drop the idea. The wealth of knowledge and experience here is immense and what draws many of us here. Yes, there are other forums that cover this era and spectrum of bicycles (which is all well and good) but to me none are as appropriate as this forum (email list) and given my intention is to keep a bike from the "classic timeline" rolling I'd much sooner trust the thoughts and opinions from those here who I trust and have common interest with.

Why? It'd be nice to turn up for a ride on a bike using Roval hubs and sharing/talking a little about them rather than they be relegated to wall hanger's because they are too low spoke to use, or even forgotten, which is how many smaller or obscure parts manufacturers are becoming. I think my intentions are positive in the overall sense.

So ..... what currently available straight pull spokes might possibly play well with Roval hubs?
