hi wayne,

jack's recommendations are spot-on.

one shop i'd recommend doesn't fall into the usual pattern, but if your boss finds himself in the area, have him visit my friend peter's shop:

http://www.cocosvariety.com/

it's not your usual bike shop, as you can tell from the blog. you will find great stuff though, baskets of old cinelli bars, regina freewheels, and last i looked a simplex LJ FD on the shelves mixed in among the pocket knives, cast-iron cookware, water pitchers and used books. hanging from the ceiling you'd see a full-campy mondia, an 80s de rosa, a tout-mavic vitus, and whatever else peter has come across this week. a fun spot in a cool area (silverlake), there are any number of other interesting businesses, bars and restaurants in the area to fill a memorable afternoon.

tell him to treat himself to a cold bottle of mexican coca-cola, made with real sugar while he's there. it'll be best dollar he'll spend that day.
