Pretty cool project.

Some paints come off with just a good wipe down with mineral Spirits.

If that fails, use some mild paint stripper put on a small area and leave it on only briefly. You can usually remove just the top layer of paint. Be sure to wash the newly cleaned area thoroughly to remove any trace of paint remover. I tried it a bit on a brush painted CCM I have after seeing the technique on a show that showed a group of art conservators recovering a wall mural that had been painted over several times. Slow going, but not as slow as you might think.
