Re: {CR} Old Farts Make Good at NAHBS

(Example: Framebuilders:Masi)

Brian, this year's show was awesome!

Great bikes, good people and a super city. Austin is really a thumping cycling city. I am certain this will also be the case in San Diego in April and NC in May!

A bunch of the CR folk had a really nice visit at the home of Kristopher Hicks-Green; his wonderful family provided a vast spread of food and drink. Thanks Kris & H-G ladies!!!

Then Saturday morning another crowd of CR folk breakfasted at an unusual restaurant "EL SOL Y LA LUNA" The director of Austin City Limits was at an adjacent table!

Then the Show! I served as chief judge (3rd stint after Indianapolis and Richmond) with the following as my hand picked ace co-judges:

- Larry Black, Mt Airy & College Park Bikes, Mt. Airy Maryland - Eric Vitela, Pro Cycle Works, Austin, TX - Jeff Buchholz, Sputnik Tools, Sedgwick, Maine - Ken Wallace, Bisbee Bike Brothel, Bisbee, Arizona

Our *Results:*

Best Road; Ellis touring bike, black Best Track; 6-11 lugged stainless steel Best Offroad; Black Sheep #3666 26" wheels, racks F & R. Best Tandem; Erickson Ti Best Carbon Fibber; Carl Strong road Best Steel: Bishop track bike w/MS tubing Best Titanium; Kish, 24" bmx Best Lugged: Bilenky Horten city bike Best Filet brazed; Mike Dominguez womans bike #1 Best Tig Welded; Independent Fabrications MTB #4 Best City Bike; Signal #3 Best Piant; Kirklee "Starry Night" Rookie of the year: Rosene MTB BEST IN SHOW: Mark DiNucci city bike green with burgundy fenders

I left Sunday (yesterday) for home but I understand there was some controversy that day on the show floor about our choices... But the judges were content that we had sincerely made the difficult selections based on core quality and substance rather than popularity, politics nor "show biz." These were truly bikes at the highest level of the craft.

Special thanks to the judges for their intelligence, taste and courage to make the hard choices.
