Archibald Sharp discusses elliptical chainwheels in his 1896 book "Bicycles and Tricycles". He also covers aerodynamic disk wheels!

In fairness to the BioPace, it's effect on pedaling was nearly the opposite of that of the Durham and other previous elliptical rings, so it really was something new. Didn't like 'em much myself, but they were a new idea.
