Jerry:

Most modern stoker stems are either 27.2 or some oversize dimension for aluminum tubed frames, and come with shims to fit smaller seatposts. Hopefully there will be some shim that will reduce a new stem's diameter to fit.

But I'm guessing you'll have another problem soon: most modern stoker stems are extra long for the much roomier rear cockpits of modern tandems. When I tried to put a modern adjustable stem on our old Assenmacher, the bars almost touched the nose of the rear saddle. Even adjusted to minimum length, the modern stem was too long and I had to keep the custom Assenmacher shorty stem.

Dimension makes a widget that clamps to the captains seat post that is basically a tube for inserting a regular road stem, and then the bars go into the stem. A bit complicated, but should allow some flexibility with a short quill -17 degree road stem for keeping the stoker bars far enough forward. A deep drop track stem would work even better. Tandems East lists them as the "stoker stem with insert":

Hope this helps, and good riding.

Very cool, but the standover height is at the absolute upper limit (this was discussed with the seller before bidding). Had thought about 650B wheels, but this would lower the BB too much and risk catching a pedal. Will probably fit 700C wheels in place of the current 27" for the small 4mm help that will provide.

Another issue - I cannot quite lower the captain's saddle enough because the stoker's stem hits the bottom rear of the Campy NR seatpost. Anyone know of a shop that specializes in tandems? I need to find a stokers stem with less rise (this one has quite a lot). Also, anyone have a source for a 25.8 straight post? I'm thinking a straight post with Brooks clamp may have more clearance than the NR post. Is 25.8 the standard captains seatpost size and therefore the standard ID of stokers stems?
