When Raymond Fouquet, the founder of Velo Club La Grange was still riding, I saw him unclip one leg, start a dismount by throwing his leg over, and use that free foot to wipe his rear tire. Maybe his friend, French sprinter, Daniel Morelon taught him that. I'd never seen this before. Disclaimer; don't try this at 45mph or on a fixed gear bike.

Jobst suggests that wiping a tire is of little use, but it's one of those things that we tend to do. I do wish people would keep their speed up and hold a line though, no matter. Also, to prevent the hand squash ( I did it too), hold the seat stay and use a couple of fingers to wipe.
